Remember Lot’s wife (Luke 19:32)

Kathee, Roger and I read Genesis 19 & 20 tonight:

Genesis 19:5 describes the depravity of Sodom: "And they called to Lot and said to him, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may know them carnally.” "

This is not politically correct but "man on man" sexuality is perverse. The Scriptures are clear on this:

  1. Leviticus 18:22, "You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination"
  2. Romans 1:27, "Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due."
  3. 1 Corinthians 6:9-11, "Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God"
  4. 1 Timothy 1:8-11, "But we know that the law is good if one uses it lawfully, knowing this: that the law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and for sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, for fornicators, for sodomites, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and if there is any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine, according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God which was committed to my trust."

Sodomy and Sodomite are words coined from the activity of that depraved city.
Sodom and Gomorrah

Lot himself is an interesting character. You would hardly know from the Old Testament narrative that he was a saved individual. He loved Sodom and did not want to flee. He had no testimony. He begged his sons-in-law to leave and they thought he was joking. He allowed himself to be lured into drunken debauchery with his daughters. Yet in 2 Peter 2:7, he is called "righteous".

Another lesson from this text is Lot's wife. What did she do? Genesis 19:26, "But his wife looked back behind him, and she became a pillar of salt"

What lessons are there for man today?

  1. Our God has a holy standard that we will be judged against.
  2. Our God will judge sin!
  3. Believers are to be "in the world ... (but) ... not of the world" (john 17:11-16)

Can the one who is involved in perverse sexuality change? The Scriptures are clear: "And such were some of you. But you were washed". Note the past tense!
